The foot and ankle is made up of a number of small bones interconnected by ligaments, muscles and fascia all working together to give the strength, stability and flexibility the foot and ankle needs to function properly.
Common conditions of the foot and ankle that we treat include:
- Acquired flat foot: Inner side or inner arch of the foot flattens from over pronation.
CAUSE- Uneven or overworn shoes
SYMPTOMS- Pain of the foot & knee, swelling, change in foot shape.
- Plantar fasciitis: Underside of the heel and sole pain.
CAUSE- small spur of bone can grow where the plantar fascia attaches and pulls on the heel or just through injury.
SYMPTOMS- Pain, swelling, numbness, tingling.
CAUSE- tendonitis, overuse on the Achilles tendon, feet problems, weight and footwear
SYMPTOMS- Pain, tightness, inflammation
- Sprained ankle: most commonly the ligaments on the outside of the ankle that are strained.
CAUSE- A sudden twisting or “going over” on the ankle joint
SYMPTOMS- Swelling, bruising, pain and instability of the ankle
ADVICE- Rest, ice, elevation and compression are often advisable in the first 24 to 48 hours.
Depending on the cause of pain the treatments we offer our patients to help treat this area of the body is Osteopathy or Sports Therapy Treatment. We may have to refer you for an x-ray to rule out a fracture.
